The Queen Mary Advice Centre provides free preliminary legal advice in over 20 areas of law to members of the community who may otherwise not have access to legal services. Areas of law are wide ranging but include Family Law, Special Education Needs/ECHP and School Exclusions, Lasting Power of Attorney, Court of Protection, and Deputyship, Community Care, Mental Health Act, Housing, and Disability Law.

Advice is signed off by qualified legal professionals regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) or Bar Standards Board (BSB)

Following an initial triage call to ensure the suitability if the service, clients are offered a 45-minute appointment with a Student Adviser and qualified legal professional to discuss their legal issue. Within 3 weeks of the appointment, the client is provided a letter of legal advice setting out the law, their legal position, and next steps they may wish to take to navigate the legal process and find a resolution to their issue.

Additionally, the Centre provides support to victims of Domestic Abuse in applying for non-molestation orders or occupation orders, and assists with the completion of Personal Independence Payment and Universal Credit applications, Mandatory Reconsideration, and appeals.

The Centre advises parents and families on family law matters and on education issues including Special Education needs, EHCP plans, and school exclusions for primary and secondary school aged students.
