Hardship Fund available to support council tenants with rent increases
From April 2026, council rents increased by 4.8 per cent, in line with the government cap. For most tenants, this means an average increase of £6.70 per week.
To support residents who may be struggling with the increase, the council has introduced a Hardship Fund. This temporary scheme is designed to help eligible tenants manage rising costs, avoid rent arrears and improve their financial stability.
Who can apply
The fund is available to secure council tenants who pay their rent themselves and do not receive Housing Benefit, Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Applicants must have a household income of £60,000 or less, savings of no more than £6,000, and be experiencing financial hardship linked to the rent increase.
What support is available
Successful applicants will receive a payment credited directly to their rent account, covering the value of their rent increase for six months. For a tenant with the average increase, this would be around £174.
Applications are now open for July. Funding is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
