Shaw Trust Supported Internships

Internship

We are a not-for-profit social enterprise with 40 years’ experience of providing employability support to young people and adults with learning disabilities. We believe that everyone has the right to live a decent and dignified life and have an opportunity for rewarding work.

A Supported Internship is a study programme aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and want to move into employment but need some extra support. An internship usually lasts for a year, with the opportunity to complete three different placements.

Supported Internships give young people an opportunity to take their first steps into the world of employment, build skills in the workplace, gain qualifications, and get a paid job.

The internships offer a unique mix of education and job coaching in a range of different roles, including:

  • Customer Service
  • Maintenance
  • Catering
  • Housekeeping
  • Concierge (hotel)
  • Retail
  • Horticulture

Outcomes

We expect a minimum of 70% of successful Supported Interns to move into paid employment, either with a new employer, or for those requiring longer term support, within our own commercial enterprises.

Transport for London

Shaw Trust and Transport for London will be supporting 24 young people into employment. Open to all with a learning disability or who are neurodiverse.

Placements last for 12 months, and each intern will complete a mixture of three virtual and face-to face placements, with the support of a tutor, job coach and TFL.

Get hands on job experience, learn new skills, build confidence, and even gain a qualification! 70% of our supported interns moved into paid employment at the end of their internship. Most importantly, we will make every day enjoyable, challenging, and fulfilling.

At Shaw Trust we believe everyone has the right to live a decent and dignified life and an opportunity for rewarding work. We are a social purpose organisation challenging inequality and breaking down barriers to enable social mobility.
