Service Description

In June 2014 Bow moved to new premises at Bow Locks. This enabled us to expand both our curriculum offer and the size of the school. Since September 2014 we have had up to 270 places for both boys and girls in each new year 7 cohort and have started a sixth form with 15 different A level and Level 3 courses.

Bow’s expansion is a response to the growth of Tower Hamlets’ population and the rising demand for local school places. In our new buildings, funded by the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, we are able to fully deliver the new National Curriculum, address the growing technological demands of the 21st Century and prepare our students for their future successes in employment and leisure.

Encouraging Ambition
Our exceptionally strong links with business provide all of our students with the important knowledge and awareness of the key employability skills they will need in their lives. Business mentoring, visits to the workplace and enterprise education are just a part of the wide-ranging employability programme that is embedded into all areas of school life. Bow students are ambitious and this drives their strong work ethic.

The development of leadership skills is key at Bow. From sports captains to music leaders, school council representatives to prefects, subject leaders to the senior leadership team, all members of the school community are encouraged and supported in developing as leaders.

Uncovering Talent
We maintain a broad curriculum that allows all students to follow both traditional ‘academic’ as well as more creative subjects. In the Lower School (years 7 – 9) all students study the full range of subjects. In the upper school pathways allow for some specialism but continue to encourage breadth; we recognise that it is not appropriate at this stage to narrow choices too much.

Since moving in to our new building we have been able to broaden the range of creative subjects on offer to include Drama, Dance, Food Technology and Product Design and have also now got the facilities to deliver a very wide range of PE disciplines on site. The introduction of Philosophy in Year 7 is an exciting curriculum development and forms an exciting transition project with a local primary school as well.

The Waterside Theatre, a 300 seat performance space, provides us with the facility to showcase our talent in the creative and performing arts as well as in public speaking. The large atria in the main school building are wonderful exhibition areas, enabling the students to showcase their art and design work for all to see.

We firmly believe that partnerships with other organisations enrich and improve the learning of our students. To this end we have very strong links with local organisations such as Bow Arts Trust and the Tower Hamlets Youth Sports Foundation, national groups such as Speakers for Schools and Sustrans as well as our key business partners, Rothschild and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Delivering Excellence
For the past three years Bow has been recognised as one of the top schools in the country for student progress. We place a strong emphasis on ensuring that all students are individually tracked and provided with tailored intervention programmes as necessary.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students this and their successes at GCSE each year. Many go on to study A Levels or their equivalents and from their progress on to university.

Until 2014, all of our students move on at the age of 16, selecting their courses from a range of institutions both in Tower Hamlets and in neighbouring boroughs. From September 2014 they have also had the opportunity to stay on at Bow to complete their formal education with us as a part of the Sixth Form East collaboration of local schools.

Bow has a personalised approach to CPD for all staff, providing a wide range of opportunities for everyone to develop the key skills they need to progress as teachers, leaders or administrators. Action research and collaborative projects are actively encouraged and each year several staff undertake external courses, such as a Masters degree.

This website is a celebration of the wide range of achievements of our young people and will give you an indication of the many opportunities open to all Bow School students. Visitors are always welcome to make an appointment for a visit to the school, where conversations with staff and students will provide further information about the school.
