“Tell Us More”

Parents of children with SEND have been telling London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) that they want to know more about how things are organised and how the money is spent, both for their child and across the borough. Parents want the Council to do this so that they can work with their school and other services to get the right help for their son or daughter.

These points and much more came up during Council-run consultation workshops with parents attended by over 150 parents. These workshops were all part of the Council wanting to show that achieving the best for the 3,000 children with the highest needs in the Borough involves working closely with families. The Council explained that this close working is even more important at the moment, because there is not enough funding from the Government and the number of children and young people with SEND is increasing rapidly. Many ideas and suggestions, to help things work better, were put forward by parents, and Council directors are looking at these.

With not enough money to go round, though, the Council is also asking the views of parents and residents, and services and schools, about some proposals for next year. The Council needs to update some of its services and is asking for views about providing less money to schools for each child with high needs. The Council is committed to making sure that the support in each child’s statutory plan will continue and that the services will still offer support required by law.
