Bishop Challoner Catholic School

Description

Service Description

Bishop Challoner is a mixed Catholic school in which every child is inspired and enabled to achieve their academic, personal and spiritual potential.

Our school has served the families of East London for 90 years, and has grown and evolved throughout that time to best meet the needs of our community. We are delighted to be embarking on a new chapter in our history after amalgamating our boys’ and girls’ schools to become a single mixed school.

We firmly believe that our parents are the prime educators of their children and that our success is a result of collaboration between parents, school and students working together. Our parents are encouraged to be fully engaged in their children’s’ education and there are many opportunities for parents to visit the school and to contribute to their child’s formation and success. By the time our students leave they are confident, capable, responsible ‘men and women for others’, equipped to embrace the challenges of the world.

Our school welcomes and includes members of all faiths, maintaining an environment where all can deepen their spiritual understanding, engage meaningfully with staff and their peers, and grow in their relationship with God. Our ethos is based upon kindness, duty to others and a respect for the uniqueness and dignity of all, reflecting the Gospel values our school is built upon.

Bishop Challoner is a high-performing school where students make rapid progress. It is a vibrant, happy place to learn, and celebrates its multicultural and diverse identity. This is a school in which every child that enters is known and loved.

“Pupils are positive about the changes and routines that new leaders introduced. These have improved pupils’ behaviour and attitudes. Inspectors saw calm, friendly and sensible behaviours throughout the day.” – Ofsted 2021

Our small class sizes create an environment in which potential can be fully realised because each child is known, cared for and encouraged to be the best that they can be.

“Pupils are keen to learn and pay attention in class.” – Ofsted 2021

We have extensive links with universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and Queen Mary and partnerships with local businesses such as RBS, Wells Fargo and Barclays. As a result, many of our sixth formers go on to Oxbridge or Russell group universities and in some cases have gained full scholarships to Ivy League universities in the United States.

Pastoral care
While pastoral care is the responsibility of every member of staff, the Heads of Year and Form Tutors are the strongest links between home and school. Two full time Student Support Officers and a number of mentoring and support programmes run by adults or older sixth form students are included in our package of care and support for each child. We look to develop the whole person – mind, body and spirit.

“Pupils benefit from a range of opportunities that enrich their personal development. Staff teach them to respect all faiths and value diversity.” – Ofsted 2021

We emphasise the need for spiritual growth and enquiry as our young people prepare for their adult lives. Regular acts of worship are a key feature of the life of the school, with students also making frequent use of the school Chapel, our multifaith prayer room and the church of St Mary and St Michael next door.

Extracurricular activities
We have a huge range of extracurricular activities on offer to all students. Clubs include art, film, languages, Latin, dance, musical groups, drama, science (STEM), coding, maths, debating, creative writing, music composition, cooking, coding, sports clubs and teams, and world religions.

All students have the opportunity to go on enrichment trips throughout the academic year. Our students visit the local landmarks of the East End, experience the iconic cultural experiences the city of London offers and enjoy journeys overseas to experience different languages, traditions and cultures. These experiences enable students to understand more about the world that they live in and help to illuminate the material they learn in the classroom.

Sport is an area in which we excel and our students perform at the highest level of sporting achievement. This includes taking part in borough and regional teams in both football and athletics and having several young women on the national athletics teams for their age groups and in premiership club programmes. We have produced Olympic athletes, Commonwealth Games weightlifters and Premiership footballers.

We would be delighted to welcome you to one of our open events, where you can see for yourself all that Bishop Challoner has to offer.
