The purpose of youth work is to facilitate young people’s personal, social and educational development, and enable these young people to gain a voice, influence and place in society and enable them to grow from dependence to independence. Youth workers play a key role in supporting young people to negotiate alternative pathways, provide a second ‘lifeline’ by offering informal methods of engagement such as music, drama, arts, sports and outdoor pursuits. Young people choose to come to youth centres to spend their free time with their friends to socialise and enjoy fun activities which they will plan and coordinate with the youth workers.
Marner Centre is quite a modern building with full disability access and it is owned by Poplar HARCA.
We are currently delivering four sessions per week which includes a Sunday session. The sessions comprise of information & support and recreational activities, for example pool, table-tennis, PS4, carom board, board games and activity based off-site trips. We also deliver accredited and certified courses that support the needs of the local young people attending our youth centre. Courses are provided internally, externally or under residential settings. The provision provides vital service to young people by referring and or directing them to all relevant services provided by the local authority as well as third sector organisations.
