Description

Service Description

University House Legal Advice Centre is one of the oldest legal advice agencies in London, founded in 1941, and was the first one to be established in Bethnal Green. The Legal Advice Centre provides a free and independent legal advice service to people who live or work in Tower Hamlets and South Hackney.
The Settlement provided a number of clubs and services in an attempt to fill gaps in public social services and to relieve distress in the immediate neighbourhood. The Legal Advice Centre was always considered a traditional part of the Settlement, providing for those in need within and beyond the Borough’s boundaries.

Additional Information

Additional Information

We provide advice across Tower Hamlets and South Hackney. The advice is provided by telephone, during drop-in sessions and through an appointments system. We also operate - in partnership with Account3 - an extensive outreach project at Bow Idea Store. We have the CLS Quality Mark and we are affiliated to advice (UK). Our Thursday evening drop-in session is also an approved LawWorks advice clinic.
The main legal problems addressed include those relating to:

• Employment
• Housing
• Debt
• Education
• Welfare benefits
• Consumer issues

*The doors are closed 30 minutes before the session closes. Sorry, but no further entry once the door is closed. Please note that we do not advice on immigration/nationality or criminal matters. All sessions are drop in unless otherwise stated. At all other times we see people by appointment only. For an appointment please call us on Monday between 10am and 1pm. Please be aware that these are reserved for clients in priority need and only given for the current week.
You must register in person 30 minutes before the evening session begins.
In an emergency you can contact the Community Legal Service Helpline on 0845 345 4 345 for free, confidential and independent legal advice. You can also visit www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk.
