Service Description

The Community Dental Services provides dental care for adults and children with an impairment or disability - a special care need - who are unable to access care from high street dentists. We provide all routine NHS dental treatment and our team includes a number of specialists in orthodontics, prosthodontics as well as special care dentistry. We also provide various sedation methods for very nervous and frightened people and for our special care patients. Our treatment service is offered at fixed-site clinics, on a mobile van and in people’s homes if they are housebound.

Additional Information

The community dental service provides dental care to people with special care needs who are unable to access care from high street dentists. Special care dentistry is concerned with providing and enabling the delivery of oral care to people (adults and children) with an impairment or disability. We provide care to the following groups:

• People with learning disabilities
• People with physical (including sensory) disabilities
• People with complex medical histories
• People with severe mental health problems
• People with severe dental phobia subject to a referral from a health or social care professional (self referrals not accepted)
• People with behaviour problems
• People with drug or alcohol problems
• People with blood borne diseases
• People who are homeless or temporarily housed
• People who are housebound
• Children with complex social problems

We try to ensure that there is no special care patient that we cannot reach. Our team includes a number of dental specialists who provide orthodontic and prosthodontic services in addition to special care dentistry. We provide various sedation methods for very nervous or frightened patients and for our special care patients, such as those with severe learning disabilities, who may otherwise be unable to co-operate with dental treatment. We provide all routine NHS dental treatment, such as check-ups, fillings, x-rays, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures.

We also provide home visits for housebound patients who are unable to come and see the dentist and we can organise the dental mobile to visit special care organisations. NHS dental charges and exemptions apply. Free for children under 18. For adults, usual NHS dental exemptions and charges apply.
