This service operates from 9am - 5pm responding to all new requests for services for children and their carers. Before deciding what service may best help a child they will make an initial assessment of the child's circumstances. In some situatuions the team may be able to offer advice on how to get help from another service.
Before they start they will advise you how long the assessment will take. The government asks Social Services to complete initial assessments within seven working days. This may mean that they see you and your child in their office as well as talking to your child's school, family doctor or other professional who you know. They will always ask your permission to talk to others about circumstances unless they believe that your child would suffer serious harm if they delayed their assessment.
Following completion of the assessment they may offer to provide services. If they decide to do this they will they will, in conjunction with you, produce a care plan to say what social services thinks should happen to help your child and family.
If they consider that your family circumstances need intensive support they may undertake a core assessment. this is a more detailed assessment than an initial assessment.
The government asks that they complete a core assessment within 35 working days and this usually requires that they visit you at home as well as talking to other professionals and your family. If during the assessment they discover that you need services to help your child with a serious problem they will not wait until the core asessment is finished before they provide you with help.
If the assessment finds that your family needs help for more than a short period they will ask their colleagues in the Family Support and Protection Teams to offer you this support.
Advice and Assessment teams offer the first point of contact for families seeking help from Childrens, Schools and Families.
