Exhibition: Blood on the Streets

Details

Description

This striking selection of posters, photographs and prints documents the rise of and strength of the anti-racist movement which was mobilised by the murder of Altab Ali in 1978. This marked a significant turning point in East London’s race relations and the engagement of the Bengali Community in the on-going struggle. Work by eight artists are on display, much of which was created in the febrile atmosphere of the following decade. This captures the numerous protests, demonstrations and clashes in the fight for tolerance and anti-racism. In the days before smart phones, photographers were at the epicentre of these demonstrations and sit-ins to provide a visual record of such events and help spread the word about what was going on, particularly around Whitechapel and Brick Lane.
